Chateau Le Grand Sigognac

A Typical Bordeaux Red.

What: Red. 2020

Where: Out of State Wine Store (sorry, Utah!)

How Much: $11 / bottle

Rating: 3 out of 5

Review: This is a red Bordeaux from the Medoc region on the Left Bank, which means it leans a little harder on Cabernet Sauvignon in the grape blend. The label tells us it’s 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and 12% Petit Verdot.

Dark red fruits on the nose.

On the palate, this is a full-bodied beverage with a lively acidity I imagine would make it pair well with a tomato based sauce. The fruit flavors are subtle, dark red, similar what the nose offers. Unfortunately, the flavor is easily overpowered by strong food. Due to my lack of access to decent finger foods (I’m traveling internationally . . . we’ve got it so good in the U.S.!), I paired this with some smoked sausages . . . big mistake. The sausage killed the wine’s fruitiness and magnified the astringent tannins, making it into a pretty rough drink. When you’re not pairing it with the wrong damned thing, the wine has a pleasantly long finish.

This wine would make for a fine daily drinker. It’s easy on the taste buds, however nothing special sticks out that would make me want to cellar this or buy it again if another selection was present.
